Hunger in Dayton

More than 17% of households face hunger in Ohio, with almost 40,000 children going hungry in Dayton alone. The number of households facing food insecurity has increased almost 7% from just 2002 and continues to gradually rise. In Dayton, 1 in every five children are food insecure, and 1 in every 6 people don’t know where their next meal will come from. Montgomery county has the highest food insecurity rate at 19% with the other Dayton counties nearing 17%.Nearly 30% of households have children struggling with food hardship in Dayton, almost doubling the Ohio average. Covid-19 is thought to have doubled these (already high) numbers meaning nearly a third of Dayton’s residents are facing food insecurity with the number even higher among children.
